Bootable rescue disks can be useful when malware is preventing you from running regular antivirus software. These tools allow you to examine your PC without needing to run Windows and they will often uncover files that antivirus software could miss. Some even look through the Master Boot Record (MBR) of the hard drive, a feature that’s particularly useful for eradicating stubborn or difficult-to-clean-up threats.
These bootable tools tend to provide a basic text interface. However, they usually come with customization options so that you can choose to scan specific folders or files, only sizes or types of files, and much more. The best of these tools will have an graphical user interface as well as support for more advanced security threats, such as rootkits or ransomware.
AVG Rescue CD, which has a simple but extensive GUI and numerous scanning options, is a great example. It’s also among the few that offer an all-inclusive MBR scan which is typically impossible to accomplish with a non-bootable program. However it’s not among the fastest on this list, and its text-only interface isn’t for everyone.
Kaspersky Rescue Disk Another excellent choice It’s fast and has a well-designed interface. It also supports more advanced malware. It offers features that you won’t find in other bootable antivirus applications including the ability to scan boot sectors and hidden startup objects as well as fileless files and the entire hard drive. You can also set exclusions to decrease the time required to scan. In our tests, it detected all malware samples we emailed it and even some that did not pass detection by other antivirus programs.
